How Many Games Make Up a Table Tennis Match?

Wei Zhang

Best-of-five can finish after three, four or five games; best-of-seven after four, five, six or seven, because play stops once a majority is reached.

A table tennis match commonly uses a best-of-five or best-of-seven format. Although casual players often call the scoring units “sets,” formal and rules-oriented sources generally call them games. In best-of-five, the first player or pair to win three games wins the match; in best-of-seven, the first to win four wins. The applicable competition regulations determine the format. Scoring guides describe five- and seven-game matches as typical formats.

The short answer: usually best-of-five or best-of-seven

If you are asking how many sets are in table tennis, the practical answer is:

  • Best-of-five: the winner must take three games.
  • Best-of-seven: the winner must take four games.

Five and seven are maximums, not guaranteed totals. Play stops as soon as one side reaches the required majority. A best-of-five match can therefore finish after three, four, or five games, while a best-of-seven match can finish after four, five, six, or seven.

Neither format applies universally. Check the regulations or competition guide for the particular tournament, league, or event you are following.

Sets or games? The official terminology

Players and fans often say set, especially in casual conversation. Formal results and rules-oriented explanations generally use game for each unit within a match.

The scoring hierarchy is straightforward:

  1. Rallies produce points.
  2. Points decide a game.
  3. Games decide the match.

For example, 11-8 is a game score: one side won that game by scoring 11 points to the opponent’s eight. A result of 3-1 is a match score: the winner took three games and the loser took one.

Using “set” will usually be understood, but “game” is the clearer term when reading draws, results, scoreboards, and competitive records.

Best-of-five vs best-of-seven at a glance

The table below shows the winning threshold, minimum length, maximum length, and possible completed scores for each common format. These ranges follow the majority-of-games structure described in table tennis scoring guidance.

Format and winning threshold Minimum games Maximum games Possible final scores
Best-of-five: first to 3 3 5 3-0, 3-1, 3-2
Best-of-seven: first to 4 4 7 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3

“Best-of-five” therefore does not mean that all five games must be played. If one side wins the opening three games, it has already secured the match and the remaining two games are unnecessary.

The same principle applies to best-of-seven. Once a player or pair records a fourth game win, the match is complete.

How to read a table tennis result

A match result records the number of games won, not the points scored within those games.

In a best-of-five match:

  • 3-0 means the winner took three games without losing one. The match ended after the minimum three games.
  • 3-1 means four games were played.
  • 3-2 means all five games were needed.

In a best-of-seven match:

  • 4-0 means the winner took four straight games.
  • 4-1 means five games were played.
  • 4-2 means six games were played.
  • 4-3 means the match reached the seventh and deciding game.

The individual game scores provide another layer of detail. A 3-2 match result might be accompanied by game scores of 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, and 12-10. The 3-2 result identifies who won more games; the five individual scores show how each game unfolded.

A 3-0 victory and a 3-2 victory are both match wins. Their game margins can nevertheless matter in some round-robin standings procedures. When players remain tied at the match level, certain procedures may consider head-to-head results and then game win-loss ratios before moving to point ratios. That is a group-ranking calculation, not evidence that a larger game margin directly produces more ITTF world-ranking points. This distinction is illustrated in an explanation of round-robin group calculations.

How many points are in each game?

Each game is played to 11 points, but it must be won by at least two points. If the score reaches 10-10, play continues until one side establishes a two-point lead. The same scoring rule is stated in the Olympic competition-format guide.

That means:

  • 12-10 is a completed game.
  • 15-13 is a completed game.
  • 11-10 is not a completed game because the lead is only one point.

A game has no fixed upper score once it reaches 10-10. Play continues for as long as necessary to produce the required two-point margin.

Why the format can vary by competition

There is no single match length that should be assumed for every event. The applicable competition regulations determine whether a match is best-of-five or best-of-seven.

The Paris 2024 Olympic format provides a bounded example. Singles matches were best-of-seven, so a player needed four game wins. Each individual singles or doubles match within the team contest was best-of-five, requiring three game wins. Those details apply to that edition’s cited format rather than establishing a universal rule for every competition.

It is also important to distinguish an individual match from a team contest:

  • Points decide a game.
  • Games decide an individual match.
  • Several individual matches can form a team contest.

Under the cited Paris format, the team contest could include singles and doubles matches. Calling the overall contest “best-of-five” referred to the number of individual matches available within that contest, while each individual match also had its own best-of-five game structure. The two levels should not be confused.

When following a particular event, consult its competition guide or regulations rather than relying on the format used elsewhere.

Can a best-of-seven table tennis match end 4-0?

Yes. The match ends when one side wins four games. If that side wins the opening four, the result is 4-0 and games five through seven are not played.

Does a 3-2 score mean all five games were played?

Yes, when the match is best-of-five. A 3-2 result means the players were level at two games each before the fifth game decided the match.

Are table tennis games still played to 11 points?

Yes. A game is played to 11 and must be won by two points. At 10-10, play continues until one side leads by two, producing a score such as 12-10 or 15-13.
